  • Talk to your doctor or dermatologist.
How It Works:

Isotretinoin (trade name: Accutane) is a powerful drug used in the treatment of acne. Four to five months of Accutane treatment usually leads to clearing of acne. It should be used for a severe, scarring acne. Is also used for acne present for many years that has not respond completely to antibiotic pills and creams.

Accutane is a "retinoid", similar to Vitamin A. It targets your DNA and alters the size and oil-producing ability of your sebaceous (oil) glands. At the same time, it works to decrease the amount of bacteria that already exists in your sebaceous glands.

Suggested Use:

The dose of isotretinoin a patient receives is dependent on their weight and the severity of the condition. Talk to your doctor or dermatologist.

  • liver disease.

If you have any of these conditions, you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely take Accutane.

Several studies have suggested a possible link between isotretinoin and clinical depression. However, no conclusive evidence has been produced. Despite this, the argument that isotretinoin caused depression and suicide has won a few lawsuits, and is partially responsible for the strict control of the drug, especially in the United States.

Accutane Customer Comments

"Accutane is a vitamin A derrivative (oral isotretinoin) which is not an over the counter medication. Thought it is effective as an anti-acne medication, Accutane has serious side-effects. Among them is teratogenicity --- meaning it can cause birth defects even long after discontinuing the drug (around 2-3 years). Make sure to consult a board certified dermatologist. There's more to dermatology than cosmetics."

"I did three rounds of Accutane a few years apart. The first round cleared my skin for a few years but the acne keeps coming back."

"have taken accutane twice in my life and after 2 weeks i started to see improvement but i find after stopping within a couple of months i start to break out again not as badly but i do still breakout. Also be sure to moisturize regularly an use chapstick it is very drying. hope that helps"

"REALLY cleared up my skin very quickly Inexpensive if you have health insurance"

"Accutane has been proven to cause birth defects and suicidal attempts. Some of have been successful, as well. Also if you have occasional zits, this is not a great product to use. It's only for persistent and cystic acne. In other words, it's for major breakouts. This should be left up to a dermatologist."

"I'd try to find other natural ways to heal your acne. because even though your acne clears up while you are on it, as soon as you come off of it, months later the acne comes back. so not only did you have to suffer through the 5 months of accutane, your acne will still come back (possibly not as severe as when you went on it), but you also end up with horrible scars that developed from the devastating break-out process that you have during the first 2 months of being on accutane."

"My son used accutane and it worked wonders however, you need to read and understand the directions completely. Yes,. their can be side effects but to my son they were worth it."
-Actual user review posted on Yahoo Answer

"This stuff works! The side effects are a bit harsh but it was worth it in the end. My doctor put me on anti-depressents during the treatment and I used lots and lots of lotion."
